Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the youngest of three daughters of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. When she was a young girl, Roman's father, a carnival barker, passed away and caused her mother, Mary Pauline (Gold), to become an attendant or cleaner in order for them to remain alive. Ruth lived in a slum Boston tenement neighborhood, Massachusetts. She went to school there. She only attended school for two years before going on to pursue an acting profession. The path was difficult to follow. While she was offered a job in New York posing as a writer for a mystery publication, no theatre jobs was offered. The following job she got was a "hat check" woman at a nightclub until she decided to quit and moved back to Boston. It was the New England Repertory Company was her first gig as an actor who was steady. The company paid her working during the day in the ushering department. She graduated with a diploma in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
